What aged players are available for this program?

Travel teams:

8U (Mites): Ages 6 through 8

10U (Squirts): Ages 9 and 10

12U (Pee Wees): Ages 11 and 12

14U (Bantams): Ages 13 and 14

16U / 18U (Midgets)

We also have a NON TRAVEL Instructional 8U (Mite) team: Ages 5 thru 8



When

When does the Travel Program start and finish?

The Thunder Travel season begins the first week of September and runs until playoffs in late March, early April for 8U to 14U teams.

The 16U\18U teams runs from September to about the end of November (15 games)



TRYOUTS

When are tryouts?

Tryouts were completed in April, however, you may still register for Travel Hockey Season as we may still have open spots available.

Tryouts are not required for 16U/18U or Instructional Mites. Midget teams will be placed based on the High School the player will be attending.


EQUIPMENT

Your child should have the following equipment, to participate on the ice:

HECC Hockey Helmet, Skates, Shin Guards, Hockey Pants, Shoulder Pads, Elbow Pads, Gloves, Neck Guard, and a Hockey Stick. Neck guards are MANDATORY for all skaters starting August 1, 2024. You will not be allowed to participate on the ice in games or practices without one.

Where

Where are practices and games typically held?

Practices are held at the Veterans Memorial Rink located at 137 Monument St, Haverhill, MA. in back of the High School.

The Valley Hockey League typically schedules games around the Eastern region of Massachusetts.

Practices & Skills

When are practices and Skills sessions, and how often are they?

Our Thunder teams generally practice two times per week, and hold weekly skills sessions for 8U to 14U teams, once a week. Our 16U teams practice once a week.

Games

How many games will they play?

GHPYH Travel Teams participate in the Valley Hockey League (VHL)

All travel teams will include the following:

35 Game Valley Hockey League Schedule for 10U to14U

25 Game Valley Hockey League Schedule for 8U Travel Teams

15 Game Valley Hockey League Schedule for 16U teams

2 Practices per week for 8U to 14U teams

25 week Fall/Winter Skills Sessions for 8U to 14U teams with Pride Hockey.

Goalie skills session with Mike Lane

Instructional Mites will play cross ice in Newburyport.

COSTS

2025-2026 GHPYH Fees have not been established as of yet.

Below is the tuition fee for the 2024-2025 season. We are hopeful, and anticipate, keeping the tuition fees for the 2025-2026 season, the same or as close to last year's tuition:

  • 2024 8U Travel Mites - $1600
  • 2024 10U Squirts, 12U Peewees and 14U Bantams - $2050
  • 2024 16U Midgets - $900
  • 2024 10U Squirt through 14U Bantam Goalies- $500


These fees are inclusive of the $100 non-refundable tryout/registration deposit, which was already paid. The first installment payment is due May 15, 2025.

*Game jerseys will also need to be purchased if you are a 8U to 14U skater\goalie, and do not have one, or you need a new size.

16\18U are not required to purchase jerseys.

Jerseys

All Players except for 16\18U (Midgets) will be responsible for purchasing 2 game Jerseys. Prior season jerseys that were purchased, can be used from year to year.

Frequently Asked Questions

My child is new to hockey and may not be ready to play travel hockey. Do you offer other programs?

Yes, We run a Learn to Skate and Learn to Play program during the Fall and Winter seasons. If you child is between 5-8 years-old and has basic skating skills and is able to turn and stop on skates, or has been through the Learn to Play program, we recommend signing up for our Instructional Mites program.
